Requirement: Our customers wanted to replace an old conservatory suffering the usual problems - no ventilation, poor construction, poor materials and cold in the winter. They wanted to use it extensively as they have beautiful views, but were prevented from doing so. It was important to design something that would provide a more comfortable and practical environment than the old one. The size was almost doubled and a new doorway was to be created for access from the dining room aswell.
Specification: Being south facing, it was clear that proper ventilation and special roof materials would be advantageous. Our customers chose High Performance glass for the roof, combined with Low 'E' glass in all the frames, which would keep the conservatory cooler in the summer and warm in the winter. A suspended timber floor was used due to the difference in height from ground level to floor level of the house.
Building Work: This project involved the removal of the old conservatory at which time it was noted that the original foundations were totally inadequate and it was a surprise that problems of subsidence were not encountered. Consequently, we had to dig extra depth foundations to support the larger and heavier conservatory. Fortunately, the weather did not present too many problems even though it was constructed during the winter months. A mini digger helped speed up the foundations.
Completion: When the frames and roof were installed, the final finishing off could be completed. As is normal with building work, we created a snagging list of items to be fixed or changed. After that was done, our customers were then able to start the decorating work.
Our customers spend a lot of time in their new conservatory and can truly enjoy the views in comfort.
